What is the ice caving tour?
A five-hour guided tour from Longyearbyen into a glacier ice cave, where you descend into the inner chambers of the ice.
What you experience
Inside the cave you are met by the blue inner chambers of the glacier, where we stop for a warm drink before heading back out.
How demanding is it?
The tour is rated moderate and suits participants with a good fitness level. The walking pace is adapted to the group.
Safety and equipment
You are given the safety equipment you need and a full briefing before we go in. Our guides know the area and carry a rifle as a precaution against polar bears, as required on Svalbard. The pace is set by the group, and the guide assesses weather and conditions along the way.

Tour Details
Starting at the base of Sarkofagen, we’ll climb the glacier’s moraine before transitioning to glacier walking, witch is about 2,5km one way, with an elevation gain of 400 meters through snow covered terrain until the entrance, so it is a physically demanding hike, although you may use micro-spikes and hiking poles as an extra help, which we will provide you with. The walking pace is adaptable to the group’s comfort and dynamics.
Once inside the ice cave, you’ll be rewarded with the breathtaking sight of the glacier’s inner chambers, where we’ll enjoy a warm lunch and captivating stories about the region. Please note, this tour is not suitable for those with claustrophobia.
Please bring the items listed below since a proper attire is essential for safety in the challenging, snowy conditions. The guide reserves the right to deny participation to guests not properly dressed for the hike.
