Polarnatt

What is the polar night snowmobile tour?

A six-hour guided snowmobile tour from Longyearbyen to a frozen waterfall, in the heart of the polar night. It suits most people, including those with no snowmobile experience, and takes you into Svalbard’s dark winter landscape.

What you see along the way

You ride roughly 70 km through snow-covered valleys to an impressive frozen waterfall. Keep an eye out for Svalbard reindeer along the route — and in the darkness of the polar night there is a good chance of seeing the northern lights overhead.

Safety and equipment

You are given a warm snowmobile suit, boots, helmet and gloves, and the guide runs a full safety briefing before departure. Our guides know the area and carry a rifle as a precaution against polar bears. The minimum age is 8 years.

What is the polar night?

The polar night runs from around 19 December to 19 January, when the sun never rises above the horizon at all. It creates a distinctive blue darkness and ideal conditions for the northern lights — something you will only find in the Arctic.
