What is the Coles Bay tour?

Coles Bay is a four-hour evening snowmobile tour from Longyearbyen. It suits most people, including those with no previous snowmobile experience, and takes you through varied terrain to Coles Bay on the fjord.

What you see along the way

You ride through Arctic winter landscape to Coles Bay, where the abandoned Soviet mining settlement of Grumant sits right by the fjord. Late in the season the evening departure gives you the distinctive light of the midnight sun.

Safety and equipment

You are given a warm snowmobile suit, boots, helmet and gloves, and the guide runs a full briefing before we set off. Our guides know the area and carry a rifle as a precaution against polar bears. The minimum age is 8 years.

Why an evening tour?

The evening departure brings calmer conditions and the golden light that only the midnight sun creates. It is a fine way to see Svalbard’s wilderness as the landscape comes alive in the evening.

We pick you up at your accommodation and take you to our base camp, where you will be provided with all the necessary equipment, warm clothing and a thorough safety briefing. The trip is suitable for everyone – you do not need any previous snowmobiling experience. We provide clear instructions and start off slowly, so that you quickly get into the flow.

From Longyearbyen we drive through Adventdalen and further into Colesdalen. At this time of year, the Arctic light creates a completely unique atmosphere: blue hour, spring light and eventually the iconic midnight sun. The trip covers a total of 80–90 km, perfect for those who want an eventful but not demanding evening trip.

Once in Colesbay, you will experience the remains of the historic Soviet settlement that is dramatically located by the fjord. Here we take a break to enjoy hot drinks and hot expedition food under the midnight sun – a rare and unforgettable experience that you can only find in Svalbard.
