Spitzbergen East Coast 2

What is the East Coast expedition?

A full ten-hour snowmobile expedition from Longyearbyen across Svalbard to the east coast, through glaciers and open tundra. The longest day we run.

What you may see

The east coast is the most likely place in Svalbard to encounter polar bears. We watch for them from a safe distance and never approach.

How demanding is it?

The riding itself is rated easy, but the day is long. It suits most skill and fitness levels as long as you are prepared for ten hours out in Arctic conditions.

Safety on the tour

Our guides know the area and carry a rifle as a precaution against polar bears, as required on Svalbard. The pace is set by the group, and the guide assesses weather and conditions along the way.

Tour Details

Your final destination is Mohnbukta, a bay where you can drive on the frozen sea —subject to safety conditions of the ice— along the magnificent blue ice-walls from the glacier-front while surrounded by trapped icebergs on the sea-ice. As you explore this harsh yet magnificent environment, keep an eye out for the East Coast’s most iconic resident—polar bears. We’ll make several stops to appreciate the views, take photos, and discuss the incredible nature and history of the region, before enjoying a warm lunch and snacks in the wilderness.

Please bring warm underwear. We will provide the rest of the necessary gear. Ensure you have a physical valid driver’s license if you wish to drive the snowmobile. Recommended contact lens instead of glasses if you need. Minimum age to participate is 12.
